About me

Abdullah Al-Awhad

Honors Journalism & Political Science Student

My name is Abdullah, and I’m a journalist first, everything else second. My curiosity, breadth of knowledge and love for learning extend beyond being a journalist. I grew up in Mosul, Iraq, and was awarded the University of Kansas International Excellence Award (equivalent to a full tuition) in 2021 to study journalism and political science with honors. Among my biggest achievements at KU was being voted by a landslide to become the first international student to serve as the KU Student Senate Rights and Affairs Council chair and the third to ever serve on the Student Senate Executive Council since the Senate’s establishment in 1969. I’m currently an associate news editor at the University Daily Kansan, the student voice at KU since 1914. I also work as a communications intern for KU Libraries where I write news releases, take photos and draft social media posts. In my free time, I enjoy traveling, especially road trips.
